leaf falling 04:06
leaf falling I had a dream Wild and blue I was there So were you Taken in your arms Down by the river’s Changing charms Our conversation’s Nonsense of course Filled with the warmth Of love's remorse I got this second skin I know how to end So, I’ll begin The winning and the wasting’s done A leaf is falling In the morning sun Everything I did Did no good Although I did The best I could I’d ask you what the hell You’d smile your smile As you said Oh well Laughing freely as you run A leaf is falling In the morning sun You’d have never take my advice If it was twice as good And half the price So here we are In the dark The twisted byways Of the heart Calling out your name If you were here You’d do the same Whatever it is that we’ve become A leaf is falling In the morning sun The winning and the wasting’s done A leaf is falling in the morning sun

What about love? Holly sang the leaving song Low and lovely, sweet and strong A yearning river flows The briar tangled with the rose I closed my eyes, I saw your face All my loss fell in that place Of what is and what is not It’s not much I know, it’s what I’ve got Our time has gone Nothing ever lasts for long what about love? gathered in I believed She knew how hard a heart can grieve Holding the broken days A light along the darkened ways Our fire will fade Ashes blown on our parade We laugh and cry, we dance and sing In the vast indifference of everything On this skin we rise and fall Sometimes we hear each other call In the silence of the night In the brightness of the morning light This too will pass All our pain will not last What about love? In the vast indifference of everything What about love?

Weary is the road Standing on the platform In the wide blue world again Heading home, for the truth of it, Waiting on a train A flower’s fallen in the dust The ashes of disdain The wheels turn the way they will To make the answers plain So heavy is the burden Stumbling is the load The hill we climb is steep and high Weary is the road There’s music in the distance An aching, sweet refrain In the soft smokey whispering Of the summer rain So it falls, as we fall Washed as the water flows Far away, on a weeping day Weary is the road Looking for some peace within The dark earth and the vine The green valleys far away Where the tears and the laughter twine As one who holds these moments It behoves me to refrain From the easy wisdom of my circumstance The parables contain For meaning found and meaning lost Whatever hope you’re showed All that’s done and just begun Weary is the road The yearning cry, the soft goodbye Weary is the road

not broken 03:57
Not broken From the shadows Comes the thief To take your joy And leave you grief And blue morning And a fallen leaf The sky is darkened In the storm Your coat is old Thin and worn All your dreams Are tired and torn I’m not broken While a light still shines Not broken By the fall Or by the climb It’s a hard road In a stony place The night’s cold breath Is in your face All your days Are laid to waste I’m not broken While a fire burns Not broken In the spiral as it turns As I end I will begin I ride out singing In the wind A hammered sun The driving rain I’ll tell the truth I’d do it all again A wounded heart Somehow beats The precious moments at your feet I see you smile It’s just as sweet I’m not broken as the river flows Not broken By the thorn or by the rose I’m not broken
7.
come back 03:21
Come back Come back, you can come back From the worst thing You walk the roads til your heels are worn Your only shirt and skin are torn Caught in the brambles and the thorns Feeling like you were born In the wind and the rain Hurts so much, feels so bad Wounded in the love you had Come back, you can come back From the worst thing Looking so strong, feeling weak Your silver tongue can hardly speak The brightest days are cold and bleak Every minute’s a week In these hours of pain I know it all went wrong You can’t see how to carry on Come back, you can come back From the worst thing Stood by your window, alone at last Your misty breath clouds the glass Seems like a sorrow so strong Could never pass You step in the river and that river’s gone As every moment pushes on The tower of grief shadowed by the swan You know that you belong In these arms again Nothing’s lost, nothing’s won You say it’s over, it’s just begun Come back, you can come back From the worst thing Come back, you can come back Your heart will surely sing again But you can’t come back unchanged

Beautiful shining perfect boy Open hearted and amazed Summers end and Autumn’s blaze A golden child in a golden haze Of the wonder of those days You were the answer and the call Swam the rivers, jumped the walls Sure and certain not to fall In the journey of it all You were the puzzle king The last word on everything Your drowsy breath on my face Your hand in mine, the soft embrace Your smile when you were on my case Your kindness, and your grace Eyes burning with the plan A whole world in your hands All our love All our joy Our beautiful, shining perfect boy

All that I’ve been Life is beautiful Cruel and cold I know the dross Is lined with gold Joy’s a butterfly’s wing You can never hold A world is lost In an afternoon The days are broken All in ruins They won’t be whole anytime soon The blow came The Devil’s clinch You get no warning So you don’t flinch No time to stand No place to think The burning fire’s Already ash The dirty hands In the bowls of cash Your wounded hearts Once so bold and brash I’m a tired man In a tired time I’ve come to answer For my crime I’m only falling Because I dared to climb The wild waters Of the river run Always here As they become Forever now And forever gone I’ll lay in the forest In the green As the linnets sing Of all that’s seen Leaves will cover All that I’ve been

dancing 03:20
Dancing Filled with the strength of the wounded We walk these days The blighted hills, the fallen field The Pilgrims’ ways With a book and a blanket A staff and a scallop shell One foot in front of the other In case you couldn’t tell We carry on dancing We go skipping down the road dancing wherever we go Walk a while in these shoes An hour or two in this place You’d be keening to heaven above Begging for mercy and grace Under these shirts We’re cut from shoulder to thigh The stitches don’t hold no more The tears never dry Blood of my blood, Marrow of my bone Frail as the fallen leaf As hard as the stone In the shadows the snake wakes With its tail in its mouth The thunder of the wings of the swans As they fly south We’re out in the furthest reaches Of the deepest love Under the blossoming tree and the song Of The homeward dove
12.
your place 02:30
In your place Standing by the cold dark river Dark tears on my face Calling for the boatman For me to take your place I will pay in gold and silver In all the trials I'd face For a sapling to stand in the sun For me to take your place So I bargain in the silence Trying to make the case For you to see the years unfold For me to take your place The nights come fast The nights leave slow It is what it is I know that's so Gone is gone Is surely true It just should have been me Instead of you I hear the whisper of the blossom falling I see the beauty and the grace In the stilness of a moment I'm standing in your place In the stillness of a moment

Help each other No one ever asked my permission Foolish or forlorn My opinion was never sought in any meaningful way Before they got me born I heard that I cried, well of course I cried In the centre of the storm Then I lay in the arms of my mother and father Silent in the dawn I’ve had my doubts, my questions, my wonderings This is what I see We’ve got to help each other get through this thing Whatever this thing may be It’s a trial, it’s a treadmill, it’s a tribulation Dancing in the realms of bliss Sometimes it’s sweet summer rain in a desert heart I would tell you this I’ve had my doubts, my questions, my wonderings This is what I see We’ve got to help each other get through this thing Whatever this thing may be Out there in the bought and sold The story’s lived, the story’s told The night is still and cold And beautiful We’ve been beaten and broken in this world Singing through the tears We’ve loved so much, and lost so much Love’s the only thing that’s clear I’ve had my doubts, my questions, my wonderings This is what I see We’ve got to help each other get through this thing Whatever this thing may be
14.
There with you The thief came calling on a summer’s day The thieving done, they stole away So the world turns over without a sound I’ll lay beside you when the sun goes down I’ll wash in the waters of my tears I will grieve in the harvest of the years Wearing the river’s flowing gown I’ll lay beside you when the sun goes down At the end of my day When the night is still and beautiful I’ll be there with you Deep in the shadows of the tangled wood High on the hills where you stood Down in the tumbling streets of the town I’ll lay beside you when the sun goes down At the end of my day When the night is still and beautiful I’ll be there with you When the moon has kissed the trees And the silver’s on the leaves They’ll flutter in the breeze And you’ll be there with me There’s a stream in the meadow and a pebble beach Kingfisher blue in the furthest reach Wherever you have been, I’ll be found I’ll lay beside you when the sun goes down
15.
reborn 04:44
Reborn For the soft embrace The calling tears The kindness of strangers In these broken years For all that’s gone All that’s here I’m reeling and rolling Reborn Dancing in the dawn For the love of this world The wonder it can be The bitter taste on my lips The saddest memory For the highest hills The deepest seas I’m reeling and rolling Reborn Dancing in the dawn The moon’s a silver balm Healing with its kiss The wide heavens And the hard stars turning Through all of this A spark in the darkness As the fires burn All the roads of the morning Your sweet return A humble heart waiting To live and learn I’m reeling and rolling Reborn Dancing in the dawn The golden sun pours down The sky’s the palest blue A field of flowers Shining in the morning dappled and drowsy In the diamond dew I’m reeling and rolling Reborn Dancing in the dawn

beautiful shining perfect boy - a review

So here we are in the dark
The twisted byways of the heart
Calling out your name

This latest cycle of songs and tunes from just the dust reflect on the heartbreaking loss of Jamie Scott, a beautiful, shining, perfect boy, who tragically and shockingly took his own life.

The fact that Jamie’s father, Pete Kenny, co writes and sings the songs, inevitably lends them an added poignancy.

The subtle brilliance of these songs and tunes is that while they take you to a dark place, they never leave you engulfed in that darkness - there is always light shining through, however dim it may appear at times.

One of the outstanding features about this album is the positioning of the track order so as to give the listener an impression of what it might be like to experience the fluctuating moods , thoughts and emotions in the aftermath of such a traumatic event.

The songs reflect a journey through grief, flowing their way through a landscape of entangled emotions, searing regret and a lingering sadness.

There are two dark, stark gems, Hidden Thoughts and Your Place. They are like eddies in a stream, with the potential to pull you under the water, but equally they are pivotal moments of passage. The songs that precede and follow these eddying moments are an integral part of the flow.

In the song Weary is the Road, the narrator is worn down, “the hills are steep and hard to climb” and the “green valley’s far away.” The emotional weariness prefigures Hidden Thoughts, in which the father imagines a scenario where he gently rebukes his son for taking the wrong path, challengingly asking him:

How could you, who loved the arguing,
the detailed disputations,
could ever have missed,
the false premise and logic,
that led us all to this

On the other side is Jamie’s Tune, a wistful and gently uplifting piece of music, courtesy of Pete Cooke, a reprise from the darkness. This is followed by Not Broken, a song of fortitude and worn down defiance, where the narrator states that they are not broken “by the fall or by the climb” and that they would do it all again.

There are so many beautiful moments on this album. The chilling bleakness of Your Place made the hairs on the back of my neck stand on end, when I first heard it.

Help Each Other is almost anthemic in its affirmation of the mystery and wonder of being alive and human, with all that that entails, with its central message:

We’ve got to help each other get through this thing
Whatever this thing may be
